A small business website needs five things: a clear headline that says what you do, your services, contact info and a form, credibility (proof you're real and good), and fast, mobile-friendly pages that are optimized for search.
You don't need 20 pages or a huge budget. You need the right pieces, done well. Here's the checklist we use when we build a site for a local business.
The 7-point checklist
- A clear headline. In one line, say what you do and who you help. A visitor should "get it" in three seconds.
- Your services. Spell out what you offer, ideally a section or page per service so each can rank on Google.
- Contact info + a form. Phone, service area, and a short form. Make it effortless to reach you.
- Credibility. Photos of your work, your story, certifications, or a guarantee. Show you're the real deal.
- Fast, mobile-first design. Most visitors are on phones. If it's slow or clunky, they leave.
- Basic SEO. Page titles, descriptions, and local keywords so customers actually find you.
- A clear next step. Every page should point to one obvious action: call, book, or fill out the form.
Common mistakes to avoid
- A clever headline that doesn't say what you actually do.
- Hiding your phone number or service area.
- Slow pages and giant unoptimized images.
- No clear call to action, so visitors read and leave.
